The
Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best remaining
estuarine hatcheries for the numerous species of fish that inhabit
Florida's Nature Coast . The Chassahowitzka River is a bastion
of pristine coastline that has successfully resisted modern man's
unending quest for waterfront housing and other development. Hundreds
of acres of water beckon invitingly to anglers as the Chassahowitzka
spreads out to meet the Gulf of Mexico.
Anytime
of the year an angler is likely to hook up with a Redfish, Speckled
Sea Trout, Sheepshead, Flounder, Shark or Mangrove Snapper.

Redfish
are abundant year-round, but peak times are March, the first two
weeks of April, and again during the hotter months of July, August
and September, when the largest schools are found. October and November
are very comfortable for fishing, it's not as hot, and that's when
the biggest Redfish are caught. Bronzed Bruisers in excess of 40
inches are doable in October and November. |

The
end of April is when the migratory Tarpon start arriving and they
usually stay until late August. BLACK ROCK HOLE,
the world renowned landmark and Mecca of anglers seeking world-record
size Silver Kings, is reached the easiest from Chassahowitzka, by
far the closest launch ramp to this Tarpon hot spot.
Experience the finest Tarpon fishing in the United States, attested
by James J. Holland's, "World Record" Tarpon, 202 lbs.
8 oz. taken on a fly, May 11, 2001 near BLACK ROCK HOLE.
Make your plans early as all the veteran guides are booked well
in advance. |

Sea Trout are also here year-round. During the Spring,
Fall and early Winter it is not unusual to find large concentrations
of fish. From late March to May you will find "muds" on
the flats where Seat Trout, Bluefish
and Spanish Mackerel and who knows what else grubbing
around in a feeding frenzy. All the main spring fed rivers here
maintain a 72 degree temperature year-round, that's why the fish
swarm in the rivers in the winter.

Late
March and early April is when the prime time for Cobia begins.
One of the best places to catch Cobia is to
find Stingrays. Cobia love to follow along behind a feeding Ray
as it grubs along the bottom and anything that is
flushed out usually gets eaten by the Cobia |
